Community Partnership Scholarship winner, Kelsie Shield, of Washburn, Wis.

Bayfield, Wis. - Chapter EL, P.E.O., Ashland Chapter and Big Water Coffee Roasters have selected Kelsie Shield, Washburn, as the recipient of the 2017 Community Partnership Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded at the May 24 Awards Assembly at Washburn High School.    

The new scholarship, a joint effort by the the two organizations, was made available to female high school students who exhibit the potential for success in Ashland, Bayfield, Drummond, South Shore and Washburn.  

"The applicants for this scholarship were all outstanding. It was a difficult decision and we seek to honor each of the young women who were nominated for this award," said Therese House, president of the local Chapter EL, of P.E.O.

"We are so proud to be a part of this worthwhile effort. It makes us happy to be able to help local women achieve their educational goals," said Jason Reichel, Director of Operations for Big Water Coffee Roasters.

The following students were also nominated for the award: Grace Pendergrass from Drummond High School, Sarah Daugherty from Washburn High School, Jenah Valin from Ashland High School, Emma Ostrenga from South Shore High School and Rachael Teeter from South Shore High School

Chapter EL, P.E.O., Ashland Chapter and Big Water Coffee Roasters teamed up at Bayfield's 55th annual Apple Festival in October of 2016. P.E.O. members volunteered their time at a booth outside the cafe on historic Rittenhouse Ave., selling coffee beans and brewed coffee, with a portion of all sales going toward the creation of this new scholarship. In all, Big Water Coffee donated a total of $1077, the majority of which is going to the local scholarship, with a portion allocated to existing P.E.O. awards.

P.E.O. is a philanthropic organization where women celebrate the advancement of women, educate women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans, and stewardship of Cottey College and motivate women to achieve their highest aspirations.
